1Despite their tiny size, some species of African termites are able to create skyscraper-like towers with internal air conditioning, arched chambers, and solid walls. 2Many of these towers are as tall as giraffes and take from ten to fifty years to complete. 3Because the heat is often intense in the African savanna, the towers also include a natural design to provide air conditioning for the insects inside. 4_________________________________ 5Although irregularly shaped, the chambers all have arched ceilings. 6In addition, the walls of these towers are amazingly hard. 7They are similar in many ways to concrete walls it is not unusual for them to be twenty inches thick.
