Rushmore in the Black Hills of South Dakota is the site of the worlds greatest mountain carving. ²The sculpture features 60-foot-tall faces of four American presidents who led the country from colonial times into the 20th century. ³____________________ ⁴Interest in creating a national monument in the Black Hills began in 1923. ⁵Sculptor Gutzon Borglum, who had previous experience in large-scale mountain carving, began work in 1927. ⁵His memorial in stone was completed fourteen years later.
