Read this sentence from the introduction.

Margaret Mickelway writes about a wild new sport for girls and boys.

Explain whether the word wild is a good word to describe junior drag racing. In your response, use information from the passage that supports your answer. Write your answer on your answer document.

Annotation: The reader states that "wild is a good word" and explains that "it makes it seem fun and interresting." To improve this response the reader could have explained what about jr. drag racing makes it fun and interesting. For example there is family involvement, being around other young people, team groupings, safety, and speed of the competition.

Annotation: The reader states that wild is "not a good word to use" and explains that wild means "crazy, outrages, and sometimes dangrous" and then concludes that parents will not want their children involved in an activity that is described as wild. To improve the response, the reader could include some of the actions of racing that may be considered "crazy, outrages, and sometimes dangrous."

Annotation: The reader states that wild is a good word and supports this idea by stating that "Drivers go up to 60 miles per hour." The reader explains that "people in cas go that fast" and "kids...who do that too so it is wild." To improve this response the reader could further explain other features of racing might be considered wild such as the use of miniature cars, the length of the track and the thrill of competition.
