Read this passage about a family’s dinner table conversation from the novel Absolutely Normal Chaos.
How does the author create comedy in the passage? In your response, use details from the passage that create comedy.
|
| Sample Student Response #1 |

Annotation: The reader responds that comedy is created “by adding alot of exaggerated emotions and offers the examples of the mom yelling at the father and the situation at the dinner table with “syblings fighting. Also, mom and dad arguing.” The reader answers the question and uses text support. To improve this response, the reader might clarify why the emotions are exaggerated. For example, the mother is clearly upset about adding another individual to an already full house of children and the speed with which this addition will occur. Because she is under stress, her emotions are exaggerated and that becomes amusing.
|
| Sample Student Response #2 |

Annotation: The reader responds that comedy is created “by how the subject keeps changing, they can’t keep upon one subject.” The reader answers the question. To improve this response, the reader should offer text that shows what people were talking about and how the focus of the conversation kept shifting. In addition, the reader might clarify why the conversation changes. For example, the conversation changes from correcting children’s behavior to who should correct the children to the arrival of another family member. Each change in conversation is caused by a comical behavior at the dinner table.
|
| Sample Student Response #3 |

Annotation: The reader responds that comedy comes from “showing demanding voices and picturing at the dinner table…” and gives text support about thrown food, hands which must be on the top of the table, and Dougie picking at his food. The reader answers the question and offers minimal text support for the answer. To improve this response, the reader might strengthen the support for “demanding voices” with the mother making demands on the behavior of her children and requesting the support of her husband. Her demands come from her frustration, and her frustration comes from the chaotic scene at the table, which is funny.
|
| Sample Student Response #4 |

Annotation: The reader responds with an example from the text. The mother asks the father’s help to settle the children and he answers that all his studies to become a scientist are no help. The reader clarifies “kids are harder to deal with that being a scintest.” The reader answers the question and uses text to support the answer. To improve this response, the reader might offer specific examples of what the kids are doing that are aggravating the mother and seem beyond the control of the father. A further clarification could be that it is comic to see an adult stymied by young children.
|
| Sample Student Response #5 |

Annotation: The reader responds “it is funny when mom just realized of what Dad said” and the Mom’s reply. The reader further explains that the comedy arises from the mother continuing to talk, then stopping and understanding her own words. The reader answers the question, provides minimal text support, and clarifies the comedy. To improve this response, the reader should provide background information about Mom’s quote and clarify the impact of Mom suddenly understanding what her words will mean to her family’s life.
