Clarifications: Each clarification provides an explanation of the indicator/objective to help teachers better understand the concept. Classroom examples are often included to further illustrate the concept. While classroom examples could be shared with the students, the intended audience for the explanation/clarification is the classroom teacher-not the student. In addition, classroom examples may or may not reflect the assessment limits.

Standard 4.0 Knowledge of Statistics

Topic A. Data Displays

Indicator 1. Collect, organize, and display data

Objective a. Collect data by conducting surveys

Clarification

Conducting surveys is a simple method for students to learn how to collect, organize, and display data. Choose surveys that are meaningful and relevant to students. They will be collecting information about themselves, their classmates, and the environment.

Young students learn effectively through concrete and active learning. Introduce the concept of surveying by using students to complete a survey before moving to a paper/pencil survey. This is easily done by asking students to model their votes to the survey questions. For example, if there are two choices, students separate into two separate areas to represent their votes. Students will concretely see the results of the surveys. An example question could be: "Do you have a pet?"
