| Clarifications: Each clarification provides an explanation of the indicator/objective to help teachers better understand the concept. Classroom examples are often included to further illustrate the concept. While classroom examples could be shared with the students, the intended audience for the explanation/clarification is the classroom teacher-not the student. In addition, classroom examples may or may not reflect the assessment limits. |

Clarification |

|
Before children are ready to sort, they must first be able to identify attributes, match, and compare objects. The first attribute young children notice is color. Then they begin to notice the shape and size of an object. The attribute of size is more difficult for students. Provide opportunities for students to sort throughout the school year as these activities help them become flexible thinkers. Sorting experiences build the foundation for every area in mathematics:
It is important that students describe the groups in a sort. This encourages them to reflect on the objects sorted and engage in reflective discussion. These discussions naturally introduce the language of mathematics with words such as more, few, many, most, and least to describe collections. |
