Clarifications: Each clarification provides an explanation of an indicator/objective to help teachers better understand the skills and/or concepts.

Standard 5.0 Physics

Topic C. Electricity and Magnetism

Indicator 2. Investigate and provide evidence that electricity requires a closed loop in order to produce measurable effects.

Objective d. Observe, describe and compare materials that readily conduct electricity and those that do not conduct electricity.

Clarification

Some materials allow electricity to flow through more easily than others. Materials through which electricity can travel easily conduct electricity.

Examples of materials that conduct electricity well:

  • Metals such as copper and aluminum
  • Salt water

Examples of materials that do not conduct electricity well:

  • Wood
  • Rubber
  • Plastic
  • Cloth
  • Air
