Examples of Biology Lessons

These model biology lessons are provided to guide teachers in the development of their own lessons. All illustrate the 5E instructional format and are designed to incorporate technology or methodology for designing and/or completing investigations. They can be used as shown or can be modified to suit a particular group of students. A complete list of materials required, along with specific procedures, are provided with each. More lessons will be added to this site as they are developed.

The Copper Basin Problem 1.1 - 1.5 and 3.5, 3.6 The Copper Basin in Tennessee provides a real-world setting for students to investigate an important biological issue - the effect of strip-mining on the environment. Students design and complete investigations that illustrate the interdependence of living organisms within the biosphere.

Oysters 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5, 1.7 and 3.2, 3.5, 3.6 The issue of oyster decline in the Chesapeake Bay provides a framework for students to investigate the anatomy and physiology of the oyster. Students interact with real data and images to explore the relationship between the oyster and its biotic and abiotic environment.
