Lesson Seeds: The lesson seeds are ideas for the indicator/objective that can be used to build a lesson. Lesson seeds are not meant to be all-inclusive, nor are they substitutes for instruction.

Standard 3.0 Knowledge of Measurement

Topic C. Applications in Measurement

Indicator 2. Calculate equivalent measurements

Objective b. Determine equivalent units of time

Activity

How many minutes?
Students will keep a running log of how many minutes they spend eating during the day. They should record the time in minutes. At the end of the day, students add up the minutes and then rewrite the amount as hours and minutes.

Note:
If another activity is substituted for eating, make sure it is one that would add up over the span of a day to equal more than an hour.

How Old Am I?
Students use a calculator to determine how many months old they are. Round off the months rather than using months and days. This will make it easier when students then rewrite their age in days, hours, minutes, and seconds. Students should record their findings in a table, so that they can compare the equivalent units of time.
