How Can You Show It?

Materials needed

A spinner with the numerals 1 through 10 (or use two 1-6 number cubes (dice), a variety of materials for students to use to represent the quantities. Materials may include connecting links, connecting cubes, dominoes, and the ten-frame board with counters.

Activity

Students spin the spinner or roll the number cubes to reveal a quantity to represent. They use the provided materials to show the quantity in a variety of ways. For example, a student that rolls 9 might show 9 with the following representations:

Ask students to verbally share the different representations they have created. This lesson could be completed in small groups and later become a center activity as students become familiar with the directions and the activity.
