Standard 4.0 Chemistry

Topic D. Physical and Chemical Changes

Indicator 1. Provide evidence to illustrate that when a new material is made by combining two or more materials, its properties are different from the original materials.

Objective b. Based on observations from investigations and video technology, describe what happens to the observable properties of materials when several materials are combined to make a new material, such as baking soda combined with vinegar

Lesson Name

Changing Properties

Materials needed

Bowl or similar container, baking soda, vinegar, goggles

Activity

Students observe the properties of a new substance formed during a chemical change.

Directions

  1. Observe and record the properties of the vinegar and the baking soda.
  2. Pour baking soda into the bowl. Slowly add the vinegar.
  3. Observe and record any changes.
  4. Discuss with students: What has happened to the properties of the original substances? Can the two original substances be separated into their original forms? (The vinegar and baking soda cannot be separated. When mixed, the vinegar and baking soda form a new substance, a gas, carbon dioxide, with new and different properties.)

Students should follow all local school system safety guidelines during investigations.
