Objective c. Identify the legal and illegal actions used to deny African-Americans civil rights |
To illustrate the divide between the African Americans legal status after the Civil War and their actual status, have students review the 15th Amendment and discuss its meaning. Next, have students read the following two primary source accounts that describe white Southerners attempts to interfere with African Americans right to vote and participate in civic life: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/reconstruction/activism/ps_calhoun.html and http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/reconstruction/kkk/ps_colby.html. As they read, ask students to consider the following focus question: What means did white Southerners use to intimidate black voters after the Civil War, and how did African Americans respond? |
