Indicator 1. Measure in customary units

Objective a. Measure length of objects and pictures of objects to the nearest inch using a ruler

Prerequisite Skills

To measure with an inch ruler, students must first have:

  • compared lengths of objects and discussed lengths using correct terminology, such as longer, shorter, about the same, from end to end, etc.
  • used a variety of non-standard units to measure length (e.g., body parts as units, paper clips, toothpicks, straws);
  • understood the measurement process using non-standard units;
  • recognized the importance of proper placement of the measuring tool when measuring length (identify a common base line); and
  • understood the need for a standard unit of measure.
