School Improvement in Maryland

Prerequisite Skills: The prerequisite skills describe what concepts a student needs to understand before working on this concept.

Standard 4.0 Knowledge of Statistics

Topic A. Data Displays

Indicator 1. Collect, organize, and display data

Objective a. Collect data by conducting surveys

Prerequisite Skills

Students will better understand the concept of surveying if they have been previously exposed to data collection by answering simple yes and no questions. These types of collections have students working only with two categories of data, which helps them to see the part-whole relationship between the numbers for each category and the total number of students surveyed.

Model for students how to ask good survey questions by presenting two to three possible survey questions. Then ask students to select one to use for the day's survey.
