Prerequisite Skills: The prerequisite skills describe what concepts a student needs to understand before working on this concept.

Standard 6.0 Knowledge of Number Relationships and Computation/Arithmetic

Topic A. Knowledge of Number and Place Value

Indicator 1. Apply knowledge of whole numbers and place value

Objective a. Use concrete materials to compose and decompose quantities up to 20

Prerequisite Skills

An understanding of number relationships to 10 is an important pre-requisite for the understanding of number relationships to 20.

Block
  • Students must have many experiences of composing and decomposing numbers to 10 before moving to larger numbers.
  • It is essential for students to have a good understanding of number concepts. For example, an understanding of 8 includes the understanding that 8 is 3 more than 5, and 2 less than 10.

Note: A ten-frame is a work mat that develops understandings about the relationships to 5 and 10. It consists of two rows of five boxes. When representing numbers higher than 5 on a ten-frame, fill the top row first and then the bottom row using counters.
