Prerequisite Skills

Before students can represent larger numbers, they need to be able to:

  • make comparisons between and among numbers through 10.
    • More, less, same, how many more, how many less
  • compose and decompose smaller numbers through 10
  • recognize quantities instantly when displayed on dot cards and ten-frames
    Block
  • quickly figure out a quantity when displayed as tallies, a set of objects, a train of snap cubes, etc.
  • recognize how numbers are used in everyday life
