Prerequisite Skills: The prerequisite skills describe what concepts a student needs to understand before working on this concept.

Standard 3.0 Knowledge of Measurement

Topic A. Measurement Units

Indicator 1. Recognize and use measurement attributes

Objective a. Demonstrate an understanding of comparative attributes such as: bigger, smaller, longer, shorter, lighter, heavier, shorter, taller, hotter, colder

Prerequisite Skills

Before students are able to compare the attributes of two objects, provide them with opportunities to explore the idea of likeness. When students focus on attributes that make objects the same, it provides them with a standard to compare attributes in other situations. Students are then ready to explore ways objects are different. Encourage them to also describe the differences. Talking about how objects match, noticing similarities and differences, develops the mathematical vocabulary that is crucial for students.
