Practice Activity: Developing a Monitoring Plan
.
Letter to Staff Development Teams — Gaithersburg Elementary School

Hi Everyone!

My school has completed a tool for monitoring indicator-level performance for individual students. It goes with the document correlating MLOs to MCPS indicators I posted on November 13, 2001. These documents are for second quarter only.

Laura Hankins, our reading specialist, and I have matched the indicators from the second quarter reading/language arts blueprints to the MCPS report cards (grades 1—2 and grades 3—5). This has been completed for grades 1—5. The "grade books" are intended to be used by classroom teachers to collect data that will inform their instruction and report card grades.

The headings at the top of each grid match the reading/language arts academic areas of the MCPS report card. Underneath the headings are the indicators that correspond to each area. The indicators in bold print are those that are evaluated by the state on MSPAP (MLOs). Below the indicators are spaces for teachers to indicate the scoring tool used to assess the indicator. There are three spaces under each indicator for data collection. The numbered columns on the left are for student names.

Please note the following:
1. Some indicators are not written verbatim due to format constraints. Consult the blueprint for clarity.
2. Indicators that cannot be correlated directly to the report card and/or cannot be evaluated using a scoring tool have been omitted.
3. Indicators related to sight word and decoding skills in grades 1 and 2 have been placed in the word recognition category.
4. Areas of the report card in which no indicators applied (for that quarter) have been omitted.

We are currently working on completing these documents for the first, third and fourth quarters. I will post them as soon as they are completed.

Please feel free to use or adapt the attached documents. We welcome your feedback!
